Memorial Day serves as a day of remembrance to America’s bravest men and women in the armed forces, both living and deceased. It also gives many Americans a three-day weekend at the end of May. If you’re looking for Memorial Day weekend events on Long Island, you’ve come to the right place.
Memorial Day Weekend Events
Memorial Day Family Carnival at Eisenhower Park
From May 27 until May 30, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow will be hosting a Memorial Day carnival. It will include rides and food catered by Dover Gourmet. On May 28, a U.S. Navy Parachute Team named the Leap Frogs, and a Marine Corps helicopter unit will be giving demonstrations. The Leap Frogs’ parachute show begins at 10 a.m., and the helicopter unit will perform an assault demonstration at noon.
75 Years of Thunder at the American Airpower Museum
From May 28 until May 30, the American Airpower Museum will celebrate 75 years of military aircraft production in Farmingdale. The museum will feature all sorts of aircrafts, ranging from the Navy’s Blue Angels to bomber planes from World War II. On Monday only, you can sit in a C-47 and experience what it was like to be a paratrooper on D-Day in 1944.
Decoration Day at Old Bethpage Village Restoration
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day when it was coined as a holiday back in 1868. At Old Bethpage Village Restoration, which replicates 19th century Long Island life, Memorial Day is observed the way it was in the 1870s. On May 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., there will be a parade and ceremonies honoring the men and women who sacrificed it all for their country. On Sunday, 1864 baseball games are reenacted at this historic Long Island landmark, so if you go on May 28 you can catch a game from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m.
Jones Beach Air Show
The Jones Beach Air Show is certainly the apex of Memorial Day weekend events on the island. Every year, thousands of Long Islanders watch both military and civilian pilots perform thrilling stunts and maneuvers above the gorgeous South Shore. This year’s performers include the fan-favorite U.S. Navy Blue Angels, the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, the popular Breitling Jet Team and more.
The show will take place on May 28 and May 29, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days. Admission is free, but parking costs $10. Be sure to get there early—the parking lot is sure to fill up by 11 a.m. at the latest.
Memorial Day Celebration & Open House at Raynham Hall Museum
On May 30 from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m., the Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will have an open house to celebrate Memorial Day. There will also be free ice cream, lemonade, popcorn, old-fashioned games and music. A trip to the Raynham Hall Museum is a perfect post-Memorial Day parade activity.
Enjoy these Memorial Day weekend events this year, but make sure you keep in mind the holiday’s real purpose: to honor America’s bravest souls.
