Every year towards the end of summer, the tennis world descends on Flushing, Queens for another United States Open Tennis Championship at the world-famous USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. This year, the tournament kicks off with first-round action on Monday, August 29th and ends on Sunday, September 11th after the Women’s Doubles and Men’s Singles Finals. With as good of a year as it’s been in tennis, this upcoming U.S. Open is shaping up to be one for the ages!

A Tournament Preview
The U.S. Open is the last of the four major tennis tournaments that make up the Grand Slam. Chronologically, the other three are the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon. The categories of play are split up into men’s/women’s singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles.
The reigning champion for men’s singles is the world’s top ranked player, Novak Djokovic, who also happens to be the odds on favorite to win this year. Last year’s feel good story was Flavia Penneta, who picked up her first Major Singles title with her come from behind win of the 2015 Women’s Singles championship. This year, #1 ranked Serena Williams is the favorite to take home the title.
A U.S. Open title has always been a prestigious honor that is respected across the sports world. This year, that title will be accompanied by the heftiest prize money in the history of the sport. The total sum will amount to $46.3 million, with a record $3.5 million going to each singles champion.
Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day Presented by Hess
Every year, a few days before the Open begins, they host a day of attractions for kids and their families by blending tennis and fun. From 9:30am to 12:30pm, the grounds are open and filled with plenty of free tennis games, live music from today’s hottest acts, and many other kid-centric activities.
This Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day will be co-hosted by Disney Channel stars Joey Bragg and Laura Marano as well as up-and-comer Jordan Fisher. There will be performances from hip-hop artist Flo Rida, pop star Zara Larsson, the band Forever In Your Mind, and Australian singer-songwriter Troye Sivan. Tennis superstars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will also be on hand for exhibition matches and skills competitions.
All proceeds from the event go to the USTA Foundation. They provide funding for the National Junior Tennis & Learning network, founded in part by Arthur Ashe 47 years ago. They are a group of 500 nonprofit organizations that offer free to low-cost tennis, education, and life-skills to more than a quarter of a million children every year.
Other Things to Look Out for
Aside from all the heated tennis action, there is so much more that goes into the event that you’d be foolish not to check out. Throughout the grounds, there will be tennis exhibitions, sponsored giveaways, tons of merchandise, and more.
There will be world-class food and drinks available to all fans in attendance. In addition to sponsored bars by Heineken and Grey Goose, there will also be wine and cocktail bars.
