Although the New York Islanders hockey team called Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale home for decades, they have played all of their home games at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn since 2015—until now that is. While waiting for their new arena to be built, the Islanders will split their time between Brooklyn and Nassau County.
The New York Islanders Return to the Nassau Coliseum
Over the next few seasons, the New York Islanders will split their games between the Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum. While playing in the Barclays Center, the Islanders have maintained the worst home attendance in the league.
That’s because the Islanders have such a ravenous fan base on Long Island and Brooklyn isn’t exactly easy to get to. For this reason, the Islanders’ owners decided to split the games until the arena’s completion. In fact, if it weren’t for the Coliseum’s limited amenities, they would play all of their games there.
However, that’s not to say that the Coliseum is in any worse shape than when the Islanders left it. In reality, it has undergone over $165 million in renovations since the last time they played there.
The 2019 Season
Coming into this season, there weren’t many expectations for the Islanders. They had just lost their star franchise player, hired a new coach and even updated the front office. To most, this was going to be a rebuilding year with their fair share of growing pains.
However, over half way through the season, the Islanders are one of the hottest teams in the NHL, currently sitting at the top of their division. With players like Matthew Barzal, Josh Bailey and Anders Lee, the team is buzzing towards the playoffs.
Since the Islanders are so good this year, almost every game at Nassau Coliseum is guaranteed to be a good one. However, if you’re looking for the best of the best, here are some of the Islanders’ top upcoming matchups at the Coliseum:
- Columbus Blue Jackets (Monday, March 11 at 7 p.m.)
- Boston Bruins (Tuesday, March 19 at 7 p.m.)
- Buffalo Sabres (Saturday, March 30 at 7 p.m.)
- Toronto Maple Leafs (Monday, April 1 at 7 p.m.)
