Gotham Comedy Club
Since it first opened its doors in 1996, the Gotham Comedy Club, on W 23rd St. next to the historic Chelsea Hotel, has stood as one of the cornerstones of the New York comedy scene. It’s the place where legends like Dave Chappelle, Colin Quinn and Lewis Black perfected their craft. In fact, if you’re interested in stand-up, Gotham also holds plenty of classes for aspiring comedians.
This 10,000 square-foot venue is probably best known worldwide for hosting NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” Nowadays, you can regularly attend weekly shows that feature top talent, as well as your fair share of up-and-comers.
Just these next couple months alone, Gotham will host performers like Chris DiStefano from MTV and MTV’s “Guy Code” and “Girl Code,” Comedian Joey “CoCo” Diaz and Roy Wood Jr. from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” Their complete schedule can be found here.
Caroline’s on Broadway
In the heart of Times Square, just steps away from New York’s top theaters, you will find a New York institution, the famed Caroline’s on Broadway. This 300-seat venue hosts hilarious stand-up comedy 24/7, 365 days a year.
In fact, this isn’t even Caroline’s first location. It originally opened in Chelsea as a small cabaret and then went to a bigger location in the South Street Seaport before marking its final move to its current spot in Times Square.
In addition to its rich history of hosting fundraisers and benefits, Caroline’s is best known as an elite comedy venue. For example, when the New York Comedy Festival rolls into town next month, the legendary director Kevin Smith and comedian Chris Hardwick will each host their own shows here.
Otherwise, you can stop by for weekly programs like their Breakout Artist Comedy Series or their New Talent Show. However, big names like Natasha Leggero, Moshe Kasher and Ron Funches all have upcoming shows at Caroline’s. Details and reservations can be found here.
With locations at MacDougal Street, the Village Underground and The Fat Black Pussycat, the world-renowned Comedy Cellar is the quintessential New York comedy club. Since they updat their schedule weekly, you really never know who is going to show up.
For instance, it’s pretty common for world-famous comedians like Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari and Amy Schumer to drop in for impromptu sets when they’re working on new material. However, these performances aren’t always scheduled, so you’ll just need to be lucky.
Otherwise, the Comedy Cellar hosts weekly Comedy Brunch Sundays at 2 p.m., with doors opening at 1 p.m., where you can enjoy uproarious stand-up comedy over a delicious spread. There is a $14 cover and a two item minimum.
These New York comedy clubs are truly some of the only places in the world where you can see stand-up comedy performances that will make you laugh this hard.
