New York Zoos

For kids, a trip to the zoo is an unforgettable opportunity to check out exotic animals that they normally would never get the chance to see, especially when you live in New York. So, without any further ado, here are the absolute best, most interesting New York zoos.

Ollie’s Guide of the Best New York Zoos to Visit

Bronx Zoo

A list of the best zoos in New York would be incomplete without mentioning the historic Bronx Zoo, where you can find some of the rarest animals in the entire world. However, they also have plenty of great activities for kids, too!

For instance, make sure you visit their huge 4-D theater which shows crystal-clear videos of animals in their natural habitats. Afterwards, you can hop aboard a grasshopper and take a ride on the Bug Carousel.

Now, if you’re looking to see some animals in action, there are plenty of places to visit. At the Himalayan Highlands exhibit, you can find red pandas and snow leopards. And, at the “African Plains,” they have lions, African wild dogs and even zebras!

Some of the other interesting creatures at the zoo include:

  • Bears
  • Giraffes
  • Gorillas
  • Tigers
  • Rhinos

If you’ve never been to a New York Zoo, be sure to start in the Bronx!

Prospect Park Zoo

Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Zoo is another place where you can visit some of the wildest animals in the tri-state area. They have a Discovery Center, which is a play space designed to connect younger visitors with nature. The zoo also offers plenty of educational programs available for school groups, summer camps, scouts, teens and birthdays.

Start your visit at their barn and garden, where you will be greeted by friendly alpaca, Cotswold sheep and Juliana pigs. Then, once you head inside, you can check out animals such as:

  • Marmosets
  • Baboons
  • Dingoes
  • Emus
  • Otters
  • Deer

Prospect Park is also where you can find some of the rarest reptiles in the world, like Henkel’s Leaf-Tailed gecko and the Vietnamese Mossy frog. Also, at 1:30 pm, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm daily, the zookeepers hold public training sessions for their California Sea Lions.

Staten Island Zoo

Last but not least is a zoo that many people didn’t even know existed, the Staten Island Zoo. This neighborhood zoo may be small, but it definitely packs in the fun! From the moment you first see peacocks roaming the grounds outside, you know you’re in for a wild time.

Besides being home to the Staten Island groundhog, the Staten Island Zoo has a Reptile House, Tropical Rainforest exhibit and tons of exciting animals like:

  • Foxes
  • Leopards
  • Kangaroos
  • Ostriches

If you have younger kids, be sure to stop by the Children’s Center, where they can gently feed more docile creatures like sheep, goats and donkeys. If you happen to work up an appetite, you can grab some grub from the Zoo Café, or even feel free to bring your own food.
