Taxis around the World

It doesn’t matter where you go in the world, there’s always going to be one thing that’s the same: the presence of taxicabs. Although they come in many different shapes and sizes, cabs are found everywhere to help people conveniently and safely get around. If you’re wondering what cabs look like in different countries, check out our list of the most famous taxis around the world.

The Top Taxis around the World: A Definitive List

NYC’s Yellow Cabs

No list of the most famous taxis around the world would be complete without the addition of New York City’s famous yellow cabs. Created by Samuel’s Electric Carriage and Wagon Company in 1897, it was the very first taxi service in town with only twelve cars. However, nowadays, you probably see them everywhere. In fact, there’s actually more cabs in NYC than cars!

The Vienna Fiaker

When it comes to some taxis around the world, they aren’t even cabs at all. In fact, in some place likes Vienna, Austria, their famous taxis are run by horsepower, and we’re not talking about engines. In Vienna, you can get pretty much anywhere in their horse-drawn Fiakers.

Run by family companies since 1693, these cabs have become part of the city’s rich heritage. Next time you find yourself in the Austrian capital, grab a Fiaker ride for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

London’s Black Cabs

Just like the yellow taxis that are synonymous with NYC, the black cabs of London are just as iconic. Not to mention, their origin can be traced back to the founding of the first public hackney service in 1605. Sleek, small and convenient, we wouldn’t expect anything less from our friends across the pond!

Thailand’s 3-Legged Tuk Tuks

Although taxis in Thailand are varied depending on location, their three-legged Tuk Tuks, sometimes known as rickshaws, reign supreme. Since traffic, congestion and overcrowding are prevalent in many Thai cities, these small vehicles are needed to navigate around.

Although they may not look too sturdy, Thailand’s Tuk Tuks are a quick, yet fun, way to travel from place to place. Not to mention, they can also be found in other cities around the globe!

Water Taxis in Venice

Rounding out our list of taxis around the world are the famous Venetian water taxis. Since the city uses waterways instead of streets, it was necessary to take taxi services into the water.

Known locally as taxi acquei or motoscafi, these water taxis are the fastest, yet priciest, way to get anywhere you need in the city of Venice, Italy.

Believe it or not, there are a whole lot more unique taxis around the world, but these few are definitely the most notable!
